Math and English Placements

Correct placement is essential to your success in college. Placement also determines the number of math and English classes you will need to take. Completing your placement before your Advising & Registration session will allow you to register for math and English in your first semester. Watch the video below to learn more!

Other Placement Options

English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Placement

If you speak a language other than English as your dominant or native language,

then we recommend you take the Accuplacer: ESL test in order to determine your

English placement. The test must be taken in-person at the Kapi`olani CC Testing

Center. You will need to submit all of your health clearance documents to come to

campus. Make an appointment for the test HERE.

Language Placement

If you are fluent in another language or took a language in high school, you may be

able to place out of the introductory language level(s) and after completing a

language course, receive back credits. See this website for more information.

If you are a native speaker of a language and we do not offer the placement test,

you may still be able to request a waiver of the language requirement.

Make sure to ask your counselor for more details.

Prior Learning Assessment

You may earn college credit by identifying and documenting college-level learning through life experiences such as military, work experience, training, and professional certification . See this website for more information.

You may also receive college credit from IB, CLEP, or AP. For all of these options, make sure to submit your official exam scores and/or documents to Kapi`olani CC as soon as possible and fill out the Transcript Evaluation Request form.
